Honest Opinion of a Game: The Price of Freedom

Just a quick forenote. This has nothng to do with gaming, but I plan to do an opinion piece as often as I can and they may not have to do with gaming, but for those of you looking for an interesting read or possibly a debate then you should like this.

Since July 4, 1776, this great land of America has stood for freedom. But what truly constitutes freedom?

This is a question we all need to ask. There is one famous line in the Declaration of Independence which in basic terms state that if something is wrong measures need to be taken to fix it. In that case the wrong was oppression from Britain; the measure taken was a war four our independence. But in a country founded on the basis of freedom, we have less freedoms than ever. No this is not about invasion of privacy or anything like that. This is about the so-called War on Terror.

For the first time ever in the history of this country, we made a preemptive strike against a possible enemy.

Some say the reason we struck was to end oppression, others for oil. I believe the truth is neither. The real reason we went to this war is to show the world that America doesn’t stand for terrorism. Will this stop attacks? I doubt it, but it may help scare some fear into people. So we showed the world we could capture Saddam and end his reign of evil. Now I must ask this question, why do we still have our troops in Iraq? What is the purpose? Yes I understand the fact that there are still people who wish to see democracy fail over there, but aren’t we being just like Britain was by not letting them choose what they want to do?

As seen on source of the tier list

Some of you may recall the original Gulf War.

I recently saw the movie Jarhead, which details exactly how that war went. I understand the purpose of this war, Kuwait was under attack, but our troops spent nearly half a year in the desert waiting for four days of action. If the task was this easy why waste this much time out of so many peoples lives just to scare Saddam into his hole then? Politics is why, because it takes six months to explain to the UN that we needed to do what was necessary. I give the current president a small piece of credit for going against the wishes of the UN and heading straight in. I do not, however, give him any credit for having a bright idea of starting a war. There is still no proof that we were even at risk of Saddam attacking us.

Although I have asked a lot of questions throughout this piece, I do have a point.

My point is that our country has drifted very far from what was intended of it by the founders. Through ignorance and stupidity this country will go nowhere. Through knowledge we can succeed in making this country a better place to live. The knowledge that need to be spread is this: One person alone can not change anything, but through the power of groups we can shape laws. Thats what democracy is all about. And just a not for those wondering, I do not support the war, but I do support the soldiers out there fighting for our freedom whether it be in a useless war or one that matters, they are the ones that keep us free.
